Our Philosophy and Services

Transformative Psychology Centre acknowledges and respects each person’s unique temperament, experiences and relationship to self, others, and the world, including their worldview.

We respect each person’s physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual and social dimensions, believing that each person has their own values, needs and aspirations.

At Transformative Psychology Centre we believe that each person experiences two worlds simultaneously (which are really part of one world): an ‘inner’ and ‘outer’ world, corresponding to an ‘inner self’ and ‘outer self’, and these dimensions are influenced by the totality of each person’s genetics, conditioning, learnings and experiences to date, as well as by various systems and contexts, including family, society, culture, the world and the larger universe.

Western and Eastern psychological, philosophical and wisdom models, principles and practices are integrated into its service and program delivery in order to respond respectively to each person’s unique temperament, experiences, values, needs and preferences.

At Transformative Psychology Centre we also believe that each person should have access to a range of psychology and learning services, programs and resources to enable and support them to develop the capabilities they need for creating a fulfilling and meaningful life that is aligned with what is important to them.

To promote and facilitate this, we specialise in providing various psychology, counselling, psychotherapy and learning services to adults.

What to expect in consultations

All consultations run for approximately 55 minutes.

First, you will be talking with another human being who is interested in understanding and helping you. You will be welcomed to the session, and what to expect in the session will be explained to you.

You will be asked to read and sign a Consent Form (pdf) in relation to the psychological service that will be provided to you, and to ask any questions that you might have about this. You will then be asked various questions about your concerns and needs that will help the psychologist to understand why you have come to counselling at this time.

You might be asked to complete 1-2 questionnaires (and again at some time in the future), which will assist the psychologist to understand you particular concerns, and to determine what form of support will be helpful to you.

Your initial conversation with your psychologist will enable the two of you to establish rapport, and a professional and respectful relationship that will be helpful to you, and help you to feel comfortable.

The first consultation will assist your psychologist to identify factors that might be triggering, exacerbating, perpetuating and maintaining your concerns, as well as what might be the best way to respond to your concerns and needs.

You will be encouraged to share any ‘difficult’ information and to be as honest as possible as this will enable your psychologist to support you in a manner that is useful to you. Your psychologist is trained and experienced enough to listen to this information and to not judge you about it, and to treat you respectfully and ethically.

Your psychologist will take some notes during the first and some subsequent sessions, which will help them to help you. Session notes will be maintained in relation to your assessment and treatment planning, and for tracking progress. This is also a legal requirement.

At the end of the initial consultation, your psychologist will provide feedback to you, discuss options for responding to your concerns and how many sessions you might require, and what is likely to happen next and in subsequent sessions, especially if you decide you would like to continue working together.

You will have an opportunity to ask any questions both during and at the end of a session. All decisions about available support options will be made by you, with support and guidance from your psychologist. Please keep in mind that your psychologist is there to help you, and to work with you in an active manner, so that your goals and preferred outcomes are clarified, and worked towards in future sessions. This collaborative relationship continues right through your time together.

The consultations are essentially about your concerns, needs and preferred outcomes. The relationship with your psychologist supports you to achieve what is important and helpful to you.
